Do You Need a Work Permit?

Determining whether you need a work permit and which type is right for you can be complex. Use our expertise to:

1. Find out if you need a work permit.

2. Identify the type of work permit suitable for your situation.

3. Understand any special instructions for your application.

Types of Work Permits

There are two main types of work permits in Canada:
Employer-Specific Work Permits and Open Work Permits.

(A) Employer-Specific Work Permit
An employer-specific work permit lets you work in Canada under specific conditions, such as:
1. The name of the employer you can work for.
2. The duration of your employment.
3. The location where you can work (if applicable).

Before Applying:
1. Employment Contract: Obtain a copy of your employment contract.
2. Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) or Offer of Employment Number: Your employer must provide one of these. The offer of employment number is for LMIA-exempt workers, and your employer must use the Employer Portal to get this number.
3. If your employer does not need to use the Employer Portal, they must still provide a copy of the employment contract.

(B) Open Work Permit
An open work permit allows you to work for any employer in Canada, except for those who:
1. Are listed as ineligible on the list of employers who have failed to comply with conditions.
2. Regularly offer striptease, erotic dance, escort services, or erotic massages.

Eligibility for an Open Work Permit:
Open work permits are available only in specific situations. Some jobs may require a medical exam. If you want to avoid medical restrictions on your permit, you can take a medical exam from a panel physician.
