What is a Study Permit?

A study permit is an official document issued by the Canadian government that allows foreign nationals to study at designated learning institutions (DLIs) in Canada. Most international students need a study permit to study in Canada. It’s important to have all required documents and apply for your permit before traveling to Canada.

Key Requirements for a Study Permit

To be eligible for a study permit, you must:
1. Enroll at a DLI: You must be accepted by a recognized institution in Canada.
2. Financial Proof: Demonstrate that you have enough money to cover tuition fees, living expenses for yourself and any family members accompanying you, and return transportation.
3. Law Abidance: Have no criminal record and, if required, provide a police certificate.
4. Good Health: Be in good health and, if necessary, complete a medical exam.
5. Intent to Leave: Convince an immigration officer that you will leave Canada when your study permit expires.

Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL)

As of January 22, 2024, most students must include a Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL) from the province or territory where they plan to study with their study permit application. Applying without a PAL in most cases will result in your application being returned with fees.

How to Apply for a Study Permit

1. Gather Documents: Ensure you have all required documents, including a letter of acceptance from a DLI, proof of financial support, a police certificate (if required), and a medical exam (if required).
2. Apply Online: Submit your application through the official IRCC website. If you’re eligible for the Student Direct Stream, you may get your permit faster.
3. Pay Fees: Include the necessary application fees.
4. Submit Biometrics: Provide biometrics if required.
5. Wait for Processing: Wait for your application to be processed. Be prepared to provide additional information if requested.
6. Prepare for Arrival: Once approved, prepare for your arrival in Canada, ensuring you have all necessary documents and understand the conditions of your study permit.

Your Responsibilities While Studying in Canada

1. Academic Progress: Make progress towards completing your program.
2. Permit Conditions: Respect the conditions listed on your study permit.
3. Permit Validity: Ensure you stop studying if you no longer meet the requirements.

Who Doesn’t Need a Study Permit?

There are specific cases where a study permit is not required, such as:
1. Short-Term Studies: Programs lasting six months or less.
2. Certain Family Members and Representatives: Specific exemptions apply to family or staff of foreign representatives, members of foreign armed forces, registered Indians in Canada, and minor children under certain conditions.
